FFA Announcements Dec. 7-11

The fruit will be delivered on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Make sure you have a way to pick all fruit up on Tuesday. All meat money was due before Thanksgiving, if you owe for meat money, please pay asap. All fruit money should be paid up before Christmas break. No exemption sheet will be signed until paid.

The FFA will have a fun night on Thursday, Dec. 10. Pizza will be served to members by invitation only because they sold $300 of meat/fruit. All members are invited at 7 to watch movies or play games. The meeting will conclude around 9. p.m.

Congratulations to the food science, ag business and speech students who attended to Allen County Community College last week.

FFA Activities Nov. 30 - Dec. 4

On Monday, several students will be traveling to Caney for an invitational speech contest. These 5-6 students will be leaving at 2:00PM from the school, and will thus be in class for a majority of the school day.

Wednesday is a half day, class schedule will be 7-6-5-4.

Thursday is a CDE day at Allen Community College in Iola: Public Speaking, Food Science, and Agribusiness Management.

If you have not already done so, PLEASE turn in meat money to Mr. Boultinghouse, Mr. Curran, or Mr. Turner!!


Fruit Delivery is tentatively scheduled for December 8th, start planning for delivery!

Lesson Plans for Nov. 30 - Dec. 4

We hope that all of our students and their families had an enjoyable Thanksgiving Break! We are eager to have you back in class this week and hope that your are excited to return as well!

Ag Technology/Exploration:

Students in Ag Tech will be working on their computerized FFA record books, beginning with setting up the basic files and permanent record and working into inventories. Know that any "real" numbers/information entered by the students will be confidential between that student and the instructors.

8th Grade Intro to Ag:

Monday - Students will be finishing and presenting Livestock Breed Presentations and checking on their "Garden in a Glove" in the greenhouse
Tuesday - Students will be in the gym during class as the high school will be at an all-school assembly in Frontenac.
Wednesday-Friday: Students will continue monitoring the Garden in a Glove and be working on an Animal Science Unit.

Small Engines:


Students will be continuing to disassemble their OHV (Overhead Valve) Engines in the Engines Lab.

Agribusiness:

All students will continue to monitor the stocks they have chosen and will be graphing their findings in an Excel graph late in the week.

Students will have various tasks including but not limited to:
-CDE Preparation: Public Speaking, Agrbusiness Management, and Food Science

FFA Activities November 16-21

The Girard FFA Chapter placed 1st Chapter Team and 1st Greenhand Team at SED FFA Leadership School on Friday, November 13th. Congratulations!

Fruit Sales are due on Tuesday, November 17th.

Meat Orders are expected for delivery on Wednesday, November 18th.

Students will be working on writing and presenting a prepared speech on an agricultural or leadership topic this week. A unit on record keeping will follow.

Student will be finishing up woodworking projects this week and begin a unit on plant science called "Garden in a Glove."

Small Engines-

Students will be completing the reassembly of their Briggs L-Head Engines this week and be starting them. A unit on dismantling/reassembling an OHV engine will follow.

FFA Activities November 9-14

SED Horse Judging was held in Fort Scott on Saturday, November 7th.

Greenhand Officers will be practicing regularly for Leadership School on Friday. Their first practice of the week will be on Monday after school in Mr. Boultinghouse's room.

District Leadership School will be held in Longton at Elk Valley High School on Friday, November 13th. Greenhand officers, Chapter officers, and a few 2nd year officers will be in attendance. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Boultinghouse or Mr. Turner.

Fruit sales are due on November 17th...keep selling!!

Meat orders are expected to be in on or near November 18th. They will arrive frozen and will need to be delivered to the buyers quickly! Remember that money will need to be collected at time of delivery.

FFA Activities October 26-31

Congratulations to the national Agricultural Communications team who was named first in the nation last Friday at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. There were 31 teams competing. Individual Placings were as follows: Austin Price 2nd, Christina Bianacarelli 6th, Brock Burnick 10th, Tyler Egbert 11th, and Nolan O'Toole Gold Division.

Southeast District FFA Horse Judging will be on Saturday, November 7th in Fort Scott. Please talk to Mr. Boultinghouse, Mr. Curran, or Mr. Turner if you are interested in participating.

Keep selling Meat and Fruit Products!! Remember that meat orders are for Thanksgiving delivery and Fruit orders are for early December delivery. You do NOT need to collect money at the time of the order, it's okay to collect it when you deliver the meat/fruit.

FFA Activities October 5-9

First off, a bit THANK YOU to all students helping with Girard Fall Festival Activities, it was a big success! The parade float looked great and both the greased pig contest and chicken poop bingo boards went well!

The chapter POA (Program of Activities) has also been completed and submitted to the state FFA office prior to the deadline.

FFA Fruit and Meat sales will be beginning soon! Look for information to be distributed in your Ag classes.

Dates, Looking Ahead:


National FFA Convention
will be in Indianapolis on the 3rd week of October. The National Ag Communications Team will be leaving after school on Monday, October 19th. All other chapter members attending will leave with Mr. Curran on the charter bus, early on Wednesday morning, October 21st. All members will be returning over the weekend, exact times and pickup locations to follow.

SED FFA Horse Judging will be on Saturday, November 7th at Fort Scott. If you're interested in judging, please let Mr. Curran, Mr. Boultinghouse, or Mr. Turner know soon!

SED FFA Leadership School will be on Friday, November 13th at Elk Valley. All Chapter officers and Greenhand Officers will be in attendance.

Lesson Plans October 5-9

Ag Technology/Explorations

Students will be beginning a unit on parliamentary procedure this week, using a modified version of Roberts Rules of Order and will develop an understanding for why meetings need structure and how Parliamentary Procedure provides that structure when used correctly.

Mini-units on Horse Judging and Careers in Agriculture are soon to follow.


8th Grade Intro to Agriculture

All groups should be near to finished with building mouse mazes and will be racing the mice starting Monday to test their hypotheses about the relationship between healthy diets and performance (both physically and mentally)

Small Engines


After completing the Carburetion unit, students will be spending some time in the shop, dismantling the L-Head small engine as a group before receiving their own engines to dismantle, rebuild, and made run again.

Agribusiness Management


Multi-tasking is the name of the game for the coming weeks in Agribusiness. Activities will include but are not limited to:

Lesson Plans Sept 28 - Oct 2

Ag Tech/Explorations:

On Monday, Students will be reviewing information for the Greenhand Conference.
On Tuesday, all students will be attending the Greenhand Conference in Cherryvale.
On Wednesday, we will be reflecting on the Greenhand Conference and beginning a unit on Parliamentary Procedure, Orders of Business, and running a model meeting, which will continue into next week. Units on Careers and Horses will follow.

8th Grade Intro to Agriculture:

Having completed animal breed PowerPoint presentations, student will begin construction of mazes for our mice experiment. The mice have added substantially to their body mass since we brought them into the classroom and now appear quite healthy.

Small Engines:

Students will be completing the unit on carburetion this week, followed by units on engine governors and precision measurements.

Agribusiness Management:

Recordbook Inventories will be due on WEDNESDAY.

Many things will be taking place simultaneously in this class, including but not limited to:

FFA Activities September 21-25

On Monday night, Girard FFA Greenhand Orientation Night will be held in the GHS Cafeteria at 7:00PM. All first year FFA members and their families are invited to attend. Two state FFA officers will be in attendance, and first year members will be receiving their Greenhand Degrees.

Thursday will be Nursery Landscape, Entomology, and Land Judging Career Development Events will be held in Fort Scott. Students on these teams will be leaving on the bus at 8:00AM.

The Southeast District FFA Greenhand Conference will be held on Tuesday, September 29th in Cherryvale. All eligible first year FFA members are encouraged to attend.

Lesson Plans September 21-25

Ag Technology/Explorations

Final Preparations will be made in class on Monday for Monday night's Greenhand Orientation Night. The rest of the week will involve deeper student of Agricultural Education, FFA Organization Structure and History, SAE, etc. in preparation for the Greenhand FFA Conference in Cherryvale on Tuesday, September 29th.

8th Grade Intro to Agriculture-Weighing mice, constructing mice mazes and giving power points over breeds.

In continuing a unit on Animal Science, students will begin constructing a maze which will study animal nutrition using live mice in the classroom.

Small Engines-Finish Study Guide, review for test which will be on Wednesday

FFA Announcements September 14-18

Approximately 40 students attended the state fair on Saturday.

Junior officers applications are currently due. If you would like to run for a junior office and have not already applied, talk to Mr. Boultinghouse, Mr. Curran, or Mr. Turner early in the week.

The FFA Creedspeakers (2) from Girard will be selected soon to represent our chapter at the Southeast District FFA Greenhand Conference in Cherryvale on Tuesday, September 29th. All eligible Greenhands (First year FFA members) are invited and ENCOURAGED to attend!

Lesson Plans September 14-18

Ag Tech/Exploration

Students took a history quiz on Friday, grades are posted. We will be continuing a unit on SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) programs in conjunction with some study on careers in agriculture. Students are also preparing to attend the Southeast District FFA Greenhand Conference on Tuesday, September 29th in Cherryvale.

8th Grade Intro to Agriculture

We will continue to monitor growth in our "Gardens in a Glove" project this week. We will also be continuing our unit on Animal Science and preparing to care for mice as we study animal nutrition and animal welfare.

Small Engines

The Small Engines class took a test over Compression on Friday and will be continuing to dig deeper into the L-Head and OHV Small Engine. Students had a lab of removing and installing intake and exhaust valves and will continue to become familiar with engine parts and functions in preparation for taking an engine all the way down to the block and then re-assemble to running condition again. Focus this week is on ignition systems, including points, condensers, and magnetron systems.


Agribusiness Management

Students have selected a class business proposal to pursue and each student has an aspect of the business planning process to work on for the group. The Agricultural Communications students are finishing up their proposal for nationals to be postmarked on Tuesday.

Lesson Plans for August 24-28

Ag Explorations Class (First Year):

An FFA History Timeline is due on Monday at the beginning of class. Students have been given a rubric to help them to complete it successfully.

Students are to memorize and recite the FFA Creed, one of the most important documents in FFA and Agricultural Education history, this week. The Creed is five paragraphs long (a total of only six sentences!)

On Monday, students will be asked to recite at least the first paragraph at sometime during the hour. Tuesday, the second paragraph. Wednesday, the third paragraph. Thursday, the fourth paragraph. Friday, the fifth paragraph. The first student(s) to complete the task are offered opportunities for extra credit. Two students from Girard will have an opportunity to put their speaking abilities against freshmen students from FFA chapters all across Southeast Kansas at Greenhand Conference, coming up in September. Memorizing and reciting the Creed provides students with an opportunity to learn what the FFA is all about while developing public speaking skills and comfort in presenting material in front of peers.

8th Grade Intro to Agriculture:

Students have a worksheet on basic agriculture due Monday. Their notes will help them greatly in completing it.

Students will be completing a unit on basic crops this week and will be participating in a seed germination activity via the "Garden in a Glove" activity.

Small Engines Class:

After completing a unit over engine part identification, the class will be taking a look at how an engine runs, engine cycles, carburetor function, etc.

FFA Announcements August 24-28

The first meeting of the year for the Girard FFA Chapter will be this Tuesday, August 25th, during seminar. Get excited for all of the year's activities and learn about the annual magazine sales!

Dues are $10 and are due September 11th. Meet your magazine sales quota and your dues will be paid for you!

Parents - A Welcome Back letter and calendar of events is being prepared and will be headed your way soon from Mr. Boultinghouse, Mr. Curran, and Mr. Turner.

Welcome back to school for both students and parents. Thank you for veiwing my blog as this will keep you informed about what is going on in our classes this year. I am pleased to let you know we have a student teacher in the Ag Education Department. His name is Mr. Shawn Turner and he will be here this semester. Here are the assignments and activities going on this week in our classes:


Monday August 17:

Ag Technology Exploration-Students will be finished their internet activity that was done in class on Friday. Students will be given a student FFA handbook in class and introduction to the FFA program will be started.

8th Grade Ag-Due today: 2-3 facts on the Ogallala Aquifer. Information will be continued on What is Agriculture.

Small Engines-Parts ID and definitions

Ag Buisness-Finish nursery/landscape and records will be updated. Students are to bring a jump drive with their record book on it today.

Upcoming FFA Events

Friday, January 23rd-Agronomy, Welding CDE. Students will also be leaving for Manhattan this day for the State Speech contest on Saturday the 24fh.

Saturday January 24-State Speaking contest in Manhattan---starts at 8:00 in the morning, will spend the night in Manhattan on Friday, the 23rd.

Ag Technology-Students are to bring back information to enter in to their recordbook. They should bring cash on hand, savings account, inventory of personal assets, inventory of livestock and if they have any loans.

8th Grade Ag- Start with a new group this 9-weeks. Introductions, class procedures will be covered.

Leadership Class-Check on progress of Record Books. Download applications for state degree, proficiency awards, district officer or National Scholarships for seniors.
